Waltz with Bashir

Cert 15

Ari Folman | Israel | Germany | France | 2008 | 90′

Nominated in four categories at the European Film Awards, Ari Folman’s celebrated animated documentary on the 1982 Lebanon war is an extraordinary, harrowing, provocative picture that does not hold back from showing the full horrors and futility of war. Ari, an Israeli Army veteran of the first Lebanon War, is surprised that he can’t remember a thing anymore about that period of his life. As he delves deeper into the mystery, his memory begins to return in surreal and disturbing images. Based on a true story, this is a film of undiluted power.
Wedi ei enwebu mewn pedwar categori yng Ngwobrau Ffilm Ewrop, mae ffilm ddogfen animeiddiedig clodfawr Ari Folman ar ryfel Lebanon ym 1982 yn bortread rhyfeddol, cignoeth a phryfoclyd nid yw’n osgoi dangos erchyllterau ac oferedd rhyfel. Mae Ari, cyn-filwr ym Myddin Israel yn synnu nad yw’n gallu cofio unrhywbeth yn fwy am y cyfnod hwnnw yn ei fywyd. Wrth iddo gloddio’n ddyfnach i’r dirgelwch, mae ei gof yn dechrau dod yn ôl gyda delweddau swrrealaidd ac ysgytiol. Wedi ei seilio ar stori wir, dyma ffilm o rym pur.

The Fall

Cert 15

Tarsem Singh | India | UK | USA | 2006 | 118′

This dazzling, funny and surprisingly emotional tale about a little girl befriended by a suicidal stuntman who spins a number of whimsical, fantastical stories, looks set to challenge how Hollywood tells a story. It’s a sumptuous undertaking, filmed in 26 different countries, and took 6 years in the making. Visually daring, audacious filmmaking.
Mae’r hanes disglair, doniol a syndod o emosiynol am ferch fach sy’n gwneud ffrindiau â dyn stynts hunanladdol, sy’n adrodd nifer o straeon mympwyol, rhyfeddol, yn edrych fel petai yn barod i herio sut mae Hollywood yn dweud stori. Mae’n ffilm foethus, wedi ei ffilmio mewn 26 o wledydd, a chymrodd 6 mlynedd i’w gwblhau. Dyma ffilmio sy’n mentro’n weledol ac sy’n eofn.

Hunger

Cert 15

Steve McQueen | UK | 2008 | 96′

This controversial, raw and powerful account of Bobby Sands’ 66 day hunger strike, directed by Turner Prize winner Steve McQueen, caused a sensation at Cannes where it picked up the first time director’s prize, the Camera d’Or. Its centerpiece is an extraordinary 22-minute single shot in which Sands debates the merits of the hunger strike and whether his near-certain death is suicide or martyrdom. Drawing parallels between the treatment of IRA prisoners, Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, Hunger is an urgent reminder of an ugly, tragic and dysfunctional period in British and Irish history.

Creodd y ffilm ddadleuol, grymus a chignoeth am streic newyn 66 diwrnod Bobby Sands, wedi ei chyfarwyddo gan yr enillydd Gwobr Turner Steve McQueen, tipyn o gyffro yng Nghannes, lle enillodd y wobr cyfarwyddwr tro cyntaf, sef y Camera d’Or. Mae’r ffilm yn troi o gwmpas un darn rhyfeddol 22 munud, ble gwelwn Sands yn dadlau rhinweddau ei streic newyn ac os taw hunanladdiad neu ferthyrdod yw ei farwolaeth, sy’n debygol iawn. Gan dynnu cymariaethau rhwng triniaeth carcharorion yr IRA, Abu Ghraib a Guantanano, mae Hunger yn ein hatgoffa o gyfnod trasig, annifyr a chamweithredol yn hanes Prydain ac Iwerddon.
