Sarah Polley emerges as a serious writing-directing talent with this powerful and uplifting story of love renewed amid the ravages of old age. Julie Christie has rarely been more radiant than as Fiona, a 60-something woman whose memories of life with her husband Grant (Gordon Pinsent) are gradually being eroded by Alzheimer’s disease. As Fiona convinces Grant to check her into a care home, Polley brings hope, poetry and light to a place of apparent desolation. Amidst barren and haunting flashes of the past, there are moods of both whimsical melancholy and outrageous humour. It’s a cannily composed story, soulful and wonderfully acted, especially by Christie. Outstanding.
Mae Sarah Polley yn ymddangos fel talent ysgrifennu/cyfarwyddo newydd gyda’r ffilm rymus sy’n codi calon am gynnau tân ar hen aelwyd wrth i henaint afael yn dynn. Fu Julie Christie erioed mor brydferth ag y mae fel Fiona, menyw 60 mlwydd oed a mwy y mae ei hatgofion o fywyd gyda’i gwr Grant (Gordon Pinsent) yn cael eu herydu’n raddol gan glefyd Alzheimer’s. Ynghanol atgofion moel a dirdynnol o’r gorffennol, mae awyrgylch ysgafn, melancolaidd a hiwmor gwallgo am yn ail.
