I Served the King of England

Jirí Menzel | Czech Republic | Slovakia | 2006 | 120′

Thirty years after first collaborating with pre-eminent Czech author Bohumil Hrabal on his breakthrough new wave comedy Closely Observed Trains, Jiri Menzel adapts Hrabal’s 1990 satirical novel to create this light-footed comedy that follows the fortunes of young Dite, a diminutive waiter with dreams of riches. From the ’60s, an older Dite looks back over a five-decade career that survives the vissitudes of Czech history, and allows himself free rein of his sexual nostalgia. The film’s serene, humourous and distinctly Czech take on the ironies and predations of capitalism, socialism, invasion and social prostitution is finally surprisingly moving.

Mae’r comedi ysgafn hwn, sy’n addasiad ar nofel ddychanol, yn dilyn hynt a helynt Dite, gweinydd ifanc, sy’n breuddwydio am bethau mawr. O’r 60au, mae Dite yn taflu golwg yn ôl dros ei yrfa sy’n rhychwantu tipyn o hanes y Weriniaeth Tsiec.
