Yes, it really is 20 years since the Film Society opened on 18th September, 1988. That first night the Society screened a short film, ‘Taut Rien,’ and ‘The Mosquito Coast’ starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. During that first season films were shown monthly from September - May, and membership was £10 for 9 films. 20 years later we’ll be showing 30 films, and it will only cost £54 if you join before 1st September, less than £2 per film, representing fantastic value. Joining after this date will still only cost £60 for the full season.

See our membership page.

We will be celebrating our twentieth anniversary on 16th November by returning to the early years of the Film Society by showing ‘On the Black Hill’ the opening film of the 1989 season. The original programme describes the film: “Based on Bruce Chatwin’s novel, this epic takes us through 80 years in the life of a family of hill farmers on the Brecon-Hereford border. Benjamin and Lewis Jones, twins born of a Welsh father and an English mother, cannot be separated from the land on which they were born, or from one another. Marvellous photography, excellent performances.” This time around we will have the added benefit of Andrew Grieve, the Director, who will be attending the screening and a celebratory buffet will be available during the evening.
