In 1980s, East Germany was haunted by the Stasi - grey men lurking in the shadows, noting every movement of suspected rebels. From his dingy lair, agent Wiesler listens to the life of celebrated playwright Georg Dreyman and his actress girlfriend. Initially the operation seems futile, but after the suicide of a blacklisted director friend, Dreyman is moved to write a diatribe against the State. As Wiesler nudges Dreyman towards revolt, he also begins a transition from loyal drone to real human being. An acclaimed, powerful film.
