A superbly crafted tale of an Istanbul family drawn into a web of deceit, guilt and murder when the father agrees to take the rap for a hit-and-run for his politician employer, this noir-ish thriller is full of dark irony. Unfolding over a sweltering, energy-sapping summer, the story is surprisingly simple but brilliantly told, focusing on the inner worlds of its troubled characters, who are visited by the ghost of a dead child.  Shot in high definition, its images have a haunting beauty and a meticulous soundscape is integral to the brooding, ominous atmosphere.   Carrying off the Best Director award at this year’s Cannes, Three Monkeys is also Turkey’s first ever submission for the best foreign-language film Oscar to make the shortlist of nine and Nuri Bilge Ceylan is now widely regarded as one of the finest film-makers at work today.  A must-see.

Gan ennill gwobr Cyfarwyddwr Gorau yng Nghannes eleni, Three Monkeys yw cyflwyniad cyntaf Twrci ar gyfer Oscar ffilm iaith dramor orau i gyrraedd y rhestr fer o naw, ac erbyn hyn caiff Nuri Bilge Ceylan ei ystyried yn un o’r gwneuthurwyr ffilm blaenaf yr oes.
